Stellar Fantasy

From thirty feet away the star pattern still reads, and up close the pile is fresh, not flattened out. First two wears the ankle sat stiff against me, then it gave and it's stopped being a thought.

Half the meet assumed these were long worn favorites. Freshly built pair, and nobody clocked the difference at all.

Fit like they know me.

The fit is right and the boot carries me through a full day on my feet. The one thing I would change is the shine: the pile around the ankle has gone a little flat and catches the light after a few weeks.

The boot was built after I ordered, so the first walk needed no easing in at all. A weekend of walking and standing has not softened the sides out of shape.

Sized right, and nothing rubs.

Pile runs neat from ankle to top edge, the toe holds its shape, and the boot was made to the length I gave. Inside the heel, though, there is a join I can feel under a fingertip; it does not rub, it is simply there.

Sized to my foot: one toe lets the seam allowance show faintly through the pile, the rest even.

These took a few weeks because they were made for me, and the toe came out properly rounded rather than pinched.

I turned one inside out expecting shortcuts where nobody looks: the lining joins run flat, the pile sits clear of the stitching, and both boots match, which is not easy when each is built separately.

The boot is good: made after I ordered, sized off my own foot, neat round the heel. The measuring is the weak part. Length and width are asked for with no note on how to take them, so I closed my eyes and picked numbers.

Six weeks in and the shape has not slumped anywhere. Only note: the stars read smaller in life than they do on the page.

Strange name on the pair. The boot itself is the serious part.

Warm by hour two.

Grandmother could not make sense of them, which amused me. The foot measurement had clearly worked, since he had them on before I finished the tea.

New boots, and off to a party.
